Hop-Ups
for Dummies
WHAT
TO DO FIRST?
Here
is a list of hop-ups I've seen recommended you do first to your
bike:
- New
Bar Kit - If you are over 8 years old, you'll want
one, trust me! This upgrade alone makes the bike rideable
for bigger "kids" as you'll have more leg room.
I would recommend a kit that includes everything
you need: bars, clamp, throttle, grips, and longer brake
cable. Trying to piece-meal a kit together on your
first try can be frustrating.
There
are two types of bars you'll have to decide on. One is an
MX bar which is wider that you can use
with a taller clamp, the other is a BMX bar
which is narrower, a bit taller and that you use with a
shorter clamp. You'll want to try each out to see which
you like better. It's a personal preference.
- Tall
Seat Kit - Again
I would recommend you buy one already put together unless
you really like stapling things together. A taller seat
will give you more padding and a bit higher ride. Here's
a comparison of two different complete seats:
BBR:
Nice cushion, not to hard or squishy. Pretty durable. Problem:
The holes in the platic pan are not always drilled deep
enough nor do they line up perfectly like the stock seat,
so you might want to have a dremmel close to help you out.
SDG: Harder
cushion than BBR. Haven't heard any complaints about lining
up the pan or durability. Have heard they are really HARD
though!
- Stiffer
Springs - The springs on the CRF/XR50's aren't
meant to hold adults. This means you'll probably bottom
out your rear and fork springs. If you have the money, go
for a full new shock in the rear and a set of new forks
in the front. If you don't have the cash, you can buy some
stiffer springs for front and rear. They are pretty easy
to put on too!
- If
you are just starting out with your new fiddy and looking
to make some changes to make it more comfortable and rideable,
one of the first things you should consider is a replacing
the rear stock shock. That's right, REPLACE IT! Don't spend
your money on a heavy duty shock thinking that will do the
trick, flat out, it won't. All you will accomplish
- Pegs
- Got
big feet? If so, you'll be wanting these. It's hard to keep
your dogs on those tiny little pegs.
- Extended
Shifter and Brake levers - Same
problem with the feet. These additions can make it much
easier to shift and stop.
