Hop-Ups for Dummies -
Stock Exhaust Pipe Modification
by Stanton High

The stock Honda exhaust pipe is an extremely good pipe, its been proven on a dyno that the stock pipe makes the most power for the stock motor. Here is a couple things I've done to maximize the output without spending much money.

All you will need is a long metal punch (1) a hammer (2) a 8mm wrench (3) 3 small washers (4) and I recommend a flashlight to see inside to make sure you don’t break anything you don’t want to.

There's a baffle and a spark arrester on the end cap. Lots of people remove the end cap and spark arrestor completely and think it has more power, but it doesn't. Removing the end cap takes away the exhaust back pressure needed to make torque. I also think it makes the engine sound horrible. The mods we're doing will make it sound a lot bigger. It will definitely be louder. If you have any complaints with the unmodified pipe DO NOT DO THESE MODS! The removal of the baffle is permanent, so be sure.

The baffle can be hammered on with a punch and it will break down pretty easily. Be careful to only knock it down in the center, if you miss you could poke a hole in the can by accident.

I've heard of cutting off the spark arrester screen, I don’t think its worth the cost of a ticket. Find three thick washers and put them between the cap and can “Supertrapp” style.

Remove the white seal and throw it away.

I always recommend tuning your carb after putting on an air filter or exhaust, you wont be able to take full advantage without it.

Next = Carb Tuning!

About the author: Stanton High has ridden on wheels for as long as he can remember. In 2003, he discovered the xr50 and was instantly hooked. Recently, Stanton was in a bad accident and half his body was burned. "It was hell," Stanton recalls. But after four months and 13 surgeries later he got back on the xr50 and is now riding harder than ever. These days Stanton rides as much as he can and is looking for a job in a machine shop. You can check out some of Stanton's riding in the Rider Gallery.
