Hop-Ups for Dummies - Airbox Mods by Stanton High

The stock air box on the Honda XR50 is an inefficient air filter, but here are some mods to make it suck air like an Uni.

1. There are 3 different things that restrict air flow on the airbox. First is the actual box, the hole where the air enters is quite small and very tight. Cutting off the tip helps it be less restricted. A metal hacksaw cuts through it very easily. Drilling holes in the bottom of the box can also be done, I recommend only making holes in the bottom so dirt wont get stuck inside.

2. There’s another piece that helps hold the foam (silver piece) that can also be removed. I don’t think it would restrict much, but hey, every little bit counts. Take off the foam to get to the third restriction.

3. This is the most noticeable change that can be done to the stock style air box. Pry up one of the edges with a flathead screwdriver, use some needle nose pliers and as gently as possible take the plate off. Try not to damage the screen too much. Take the blunt side of the screwdriver and press the screen in so no wires are poking out. Reinstall the foam filter after you clean it and be sure to remember to lightly oil it.

The stock air box will now flow as good as any aftermarket air filter saving the $15.

The carb will now need more fuel to take advantage of the better flow, adjust the air screw to where it runs the best for you. Try 1/4 turns and 1/8 turns because, it will not be far off. You may need to make more carb adjustments as necessary. Look for more tips on getting the most out of stock xr50 carb soon on Minis to the Max!

About the author: Stanton High has ridden on wheels for as long as he can remember. In 2003, he discovered the xr50 and was instantly hooked. Recently, Stanton was in a bad accident and half his body was burned. "It was hell," Stanton recalls. But after four months and 13 surguries later he got back on the xr50 and is now riding harder than ever. These days Stanton rides as much as he can and is looking for a job in a machine shop. You can check out some of Stanton's riding in the Rider Gallery.
